Hope, A Trip to Mars

The UAE celebrates its three year anniversary of the Hope Probe. Amidst the global pandemic of COVID-19, the Emirati Hope Probe was launched into Mars, marking a significant day on the calendar of the UAE.  The mission of Hope was to study the atmosphere of Mars, specifically the celestial activity of the Martian moon Deimos.

Hope arrived on Mars in 2021 with the sole purpose of studying the upper and lower atmosphere, and how these atmospheres interact with one another. The Emirates Mars Mission, EMM, is meant to answer and address all questions regarding the atmosphere on Mars along with the composition of hydrogen and oxygen on its surface.

Objectives of the EMM

  1. Understand the climate dynamics and the global weather map through characterising the lower atmosphere of Mars.
  2. Explain how the weather changes the escape of hydrogen and oxygen correlating the lower atmospheric conditions.
  3. Understand the structure and variability of Hydrogen and Oxygen in the upper atmosphere.

Why Mars?

Mars has been the one planet that has piqued every person’s curiosity for over a century, and that curiosity has led to several Martian projects; all serving a unique purpose and producing unique findings in order to fully research the planet and further explore if there is a possibility of establishing a life.

With the rapid development of technology and specifically the advancement in space technology; countries can now easily explore space and the solar system, expanding their research. This has further led to the colonisation of space as there is a race to explore more options and even expand human civilisation on other planets, Mars being the top choice.
